Your reference list for finding a bank in the 92620 area code does not list one credit union. This is a great idea-i have been do business with 4 credit unions for years. I only keep an account at the wells fargo for travel and because I bought stock and they gave me one for free. I do not use their credit cards and the 2 I have I pay off each month. I have saved 20% of the gross income i have made for over 52 years at the request of my mother-who was in Buekenwald death camp in Germany(she was one of 1500 women) political prisioner for 22 months. her father paid off the commmendant from his saving and the gold from his and his wife and son's teeth.
she,my mother, always had us "save so we did not become a slave" to anyone. I have bought and invested and lived and educated my children all from interest on investment-i have the first nickel, dime quater and doolar i ever made and the last and live off and only spend the interes.

Thank you for including information on credit unions on this site! However, as a long time advocate of the credit union movement, as a member, an employee and our Financial Education Advocate, I'd like to suggest that information on joining credit unions be made more prominant on the site. It took a while to find this and it may be advantageous to have the Credit Union information much closer to the top. People lose interest--it took me 3 visits to finally find it, and I was looking for it!
We'd also like credit union information accessable when entering zip codes, or at least a mention that credit union membershio is a great option to explore-and much closer to the top!

Thank you for listening. We'd appreciate it!

I wish you would include the credit union link under the bank locator link. As one who has worked in banking, I can tell you that credit unions undergo more rigorous auditing than banks and have stricter regulations.

If you truly want your money to be safe, credit unions are the right choice.

The President needs all of us, especially in 2010, and he knows it. So let's stop blaming one good man who inherited a country suffering from the rape of oil men, and instead, cut off the cash flow from the "The Takers" at its source: the corporate puppeteers controlling our government at all levels. Yes, take your money away from the likes of CITI, Wells Fargo and Bank of America, who have so abused, but don’t stop there. Sign petitions, rally your neighbors, call & write members of Congress, and yes, implore the Left to fight on without disappointment in what is, and the Right to let go of the 1950s that never were. Proclaim to all, "this will be “the Land of the Free” again, beginning with me." Refuse to be the manure under the feet of the Corporate ‘money changers,” used to fertilize their financial harvest. In this Census and Election year, send the message, loud & clear: “We the People” count for something more than bankers’ dream for increased “green.” Demand the repeal of the most unpatriotic “Patriot Act,” as just one of many wake up calls for the ensconced old guard holding hostage our National government and personal economies. Remember the power of the words, “I AM,” and proclaim across the political range, “I Am the Change,” and I’m coming to reclaim my Country from the shadows and lies of Board Rooms unseen. Corporate America, “We the People” now see your true color and it’s not Red, White, Blue or Black, it’s Green. We know your cold calculating domestic anti-American activities of greed and oppression are as dangerous to our American financial stability as any attack from murderous members of al Qaeda.

True, President Obama is no Saint or Messiah, for despite all efforts by "W" & Cheney, Presidents are not Kings. With due apologies to Thoreau, like the Kennedy brothers, our new young President has built our castles in the air we breathe, which is where our dreams should be. However, it is up to us to put the foundations under them. Understand? Now "Lift Every Voice and Sing: Let Freedom Ring," and Give HOPE a Helping Hand.

I hope you will include credit unions in your zip code list. My credit union gives me a fair deal on my mortgage, human beings to answer my questions, no hidden fees, and the money goes right back into the community. Our housing cooperative wouldn't have made it without credit union financing. They are there for us. Please include them!

Question: Is this blog somehow affiliated with www.IRABankRatings.com? I clicked on that link so I could get rating information on my current bank as well as my credit union, but www.IRABankRatings.com charges a whopping "a la carte" fee of $50 for a single report on a single financial institution, or $1000 a year for unlimited reports.

Something smells scammy about that.

Bank rating info should be available to every consumer and NOT as a for-profit enterprise.

Please be cautious with Bankrate.com. They currently still list Lehman Brothers as a 5-star secure bank, even though they went bankrupt over a year ago. I wrote them about this and they said their ratings are at least 2-3 quarters behind. Bauer Financial is better, but they make you pay for reports. The best bank rating system I've found, although sadly it doesn't do credit unions, is Weiss, which is now owned by TheStreet.com. The reports are free and indicate the bank's rating, as well as graphically illustrate its capitalization, asset quality, liquidity, profitability, and stability. Their updates are also kept more current than Bankrate. Their last assessment was Oct 2009, they will be performing another this month, Jan 2010. http://www.thestreet.com/bank-safety/index.html
